In front of 77.000 people, Max Biaggi (Aprilia Alitalia) won each 22-lap race at Portimao today to go second in the championship rankings, behind the rider who took two second places, Leon Haslam (Alstare Suzuki). The margin of victory for Biaggi was 0.200 seconds in race one, and 0.191 seconds in race two, as Max took his career win total to six. He scored his first SBK double win today, having started the race second on the grid. Haslam now has 85 points, Biaggi 69.

Round one was a memorable one for both Leon Haslam and Sylvain Guintoli, with Haslam leaving Australia with his maiden win and the championship lead, while Guintoli only just missed the race two podium, and is now inside the overall top five.

Andrew Pitt is a rider who knows how to win at the highest level of Superbike racing, and although his technical package in the BMW Reitwagen team is not even close to completion at this early stage of the year, he was full of praise for his bike and team after scoring points in each race in Australia.

The first weekend of his return to SBK racing was a tough one for double champion James Toseland (Sterilgarda Yamaha). He picked up a fracture in his left hand after a crash in qualifying at Phillip Island and only scored points in the second leg, after falling hard in race one.
